Okay folks, this is an old timer's song to be sure, and not to everyone's liking (depending primarily on your take on Pig), but the first 6-8 min can contain amazing music. For example, the version from 2-11-69 (commercial, 'Good Morning...,' release in 1997) is outstanding: you will not hear a tighter coordination among the boys in the jam following Pig's first verses (ie, about the 2 min mark).

Even if you don't necessarily go for this song, I urge you to put it on, the version from 2-11-69, turn it way up (vital), and listen to the first five minutes. BTW, The Eleven on this one is also one of the best, but skip Hey Jude...

hey Tell - r u the 60's lover? I can't remember - don't post here much (hey Dancin - here u r!!) but read others alot. Anyway - looking for the show where Pig says to Jerry, "that's it-play your guitar". It comes in the later part of what has to be a 20 minute something (I think midnight hour or lovelight) from the 60's and I want to say Avalon. How anybody can listen to the set that it's in and not say "whow" is beyond me.

Hey--thanks for noticing--yes, that's me, and oh yes, Pig says that a number of times over the years. I recall it during the mid section of long Midnight Hours when often just he and Jerry are audible, and defn during a Lovelight or two. If you were calling me out (in a nice way) to quote chapter and verse (ie, which show, and when in which song), that will take some doing.

I always loved it when Pig does that; he and Jerry really connected.

Oh yes...here is the first one I found in the first place I looked (just lucky): 8'10" point of Midnight Hour from 9-3-67. I will find more and post them here...Enjoying myself finding them.

# 2: "I suggest you play your guitar" (11'50" mark, Lovelight, 4-27-71).

Oh...picky, picky, picky. In this one, 67, he says, 'go on--play your guitar' (it's available in the Phil Zone CD, commercially). I know I have heard the exact wording you want, more than once, but you'll have to trust me...Sorry--you're on your own from here on out; those two are close enough for government work, as they say...

Have fun.

Hey--I can't stop thinking about it...this may not help, but I am now convinced that he says it on the Mid Hr version on the ablum (blue, with skulls) titled 'History of the GD' or something like that, that has early stuff, and I think it even lists Avalon as the source. I listened to it alot when young, and now I am thinking that is where he uses the exact words you want, with the pause between 'it' and 'play' and a tone that is special (better than those I dug up for you...).

Anyway, good luck again.

I don't think it's on an album,cd,etc. - although most of my listening has always been live or sounboard (friend) tapes.

Don't give up on me - u gave all u had???????? - I don't buy it!!!

Hey--wait a minute, slow down (if you don't recognize that, stop reading!). Okay, you're busting me for not doin my homework and YOU don't know about the early Dead albums of avalon work (Vintage Dead, Historic Dead--the one I own, etc)?! You can look those up. Here is the info from THIS forum (where you can get the tunes):

"This is the show that comprised the original (and long out of print) "Vintage Dead" and "Historic Dead" LPs, released in 1970 and 71. This is really top notch, the dead at their early best. The sound quality isn't perfect, but still quite good
If you wish to burn this the way it appeared on the original LPs:
VINTAGE DEAD:
I Know You Rider
It Hurts Me Too
It's All Over Now
Dancin' In The Streets
Midnight Hour
HISTORIC DEAD
Good Morning Little Schoolgirl
Lindy
Stealin'
Same Thing

Collection: GratefulDead
Band/Artist: Grateful Dead
Date: September 16, 1966 (check for other copies)
Venue: Avalon Ballroom
Location: San Francisco, CA

Source: Soundboard
Lineage: SBD> MR> ??> CDR > EAC(secure) > DePopper (remove clicks) > CD Wave (retrack) > mkwACT > SHN (seekable)

Okay, I already listened and here he says: "There you go--play your guitar" but that is close enough...

You find the other. He clearly does it ("...something...play your guitar.") a lot...

It's during the 4-17-71 "Brooklyn Bridge" rap during Good Lovin. Pig says "And if yo momma don't like it, tell her to write her Congressman" Jerry stats wailing and Pig says "I'm just makin suggestions. Right now I suggest you just play your git-tar," and Jerry tears off from there.

Ah--that's great; he does the suggestions on congressmen in the Fillmore show Lovelight (post above) too. I know that he does it (ie, 'play your guitar') in MidHr, LoLig, GLovin, and I think occas in long versions of GMornSchoolgirl.

It seems i'm posting a bit late to this thread that seems to have wound down, but just wanted to chime in that Lovelight was one of those songs that sort of grew on me. I mean, i really dug Pigpen doing King Bee & Schoolgirl & especially Easy Wind. Lovelight, well dare i say it, it seemed to go on too long (blasphemy!); that is, i loved the jams that went on in the song, but the rap often bothered me. Anyway, that was in the early days of my listening, but as time went on (as it is wont to do), i started really digging the Pig rap, and the various cadences that he would bring to Lovelight. And now these days, if i see a Lovelight on the set list, i want to hear it, and probably explains, in part, my penchant for '69 Dead. The fact is, no one did it like the Pig, and after Jerry, he was the Man.

Fear not in revealing long lost secrets; I really loved the initial portion, especially the first jam post first lyrics (wish I knew what it was called...first verse jam, lets call it), but the rest left me flat--it was years and years into the boys before I really gave this song a chance. I always loved the way Pig and Jerry interacted on Mid Hr and to a degree, LoveLight, and a few others, but the early days with Mid Hr they really 'spoke' to each other...and that is what Ducats was speaking of, I think.
